The US Department of Transportation and
the International Maritime Organization mandate that
hazardous materials/dangerous goods employers provide transportation security and compliance
training for their employees. Employers of shippers who prepare hazardous
materials/dangerous goods for transportation by water, water carriers, and
associated industries such as freight forwarders, and NVOCCs are required to
train their employees and to provide recurrent training whenever significant
amendments in the IMDG Code affect the performance of a hazardous material
function. The regulations also mandate that training provided to HazMat/Dangerous Goods employees must include a component on Hazardous Material
Transportation Security.

IMDG Code
mandates training in the IMDG Code for shore-side personnel,
including those who prepare, handle, load, unload, or plan the stowage of
dangerous goods.
Online Training Courses
The
International Vessel Operators Dangerous Goods Association (IVODGA)
offers Online Training to help you meet your training
needs. Although face-to-face events are more favorable, online
training is a cost effective alternative when budgets are tight, travel is limited, and resources are scarce.
The US Department of Transportation and
the International Maritime Organization (effective Amd 34-08) mandate that
hazardous materials/dangerous goods employers provide transportation security and compliance
training for their employees. Employers of shippers who prepare hazardous
materials/dangerous goods for transportation by water, water carriers, and
associated industries such as freight forwarders, and NVOCCs are required to
train their employees and to provide recurrent training whenever significant
amendments in the IMDG Code effect the performance of a hazardous material
function. The regulations also mandate that training provided to
HazMat/Dangerous Goods employees must include a component on Hazardous Material
Transportation Security.
49 CFR, Part 172, Subpart H,
requires that all hazmat employees must be trained within 90 days of starting
employment and must receive recurrent training at least every three years. Job
changes and regulatory amendments may require retraining.
Chapter 1.3 of the IMDG Code states
"... personnel engaged in the transport of dangerous goods intended to be
transported by sea should receive training in the contents of dangerous goods
provisions commensurate with their responsibilities. Training requirements
specific to security of dangerous goods in Chapter 1.4 should also be addressed."
